During the Month of Performance Art-Berlin, the richness and diversity of contemporary, independent, and experimental performance art is showcased at various locations. MPA-B brings groundbreaking performances closer to both a broad audience and professionals in the field. This year's program features 17 international curators. The performance project Crossing Context Neukölln is hosted by Kunstverein Neukölln and curated by artist Camilla Graff Junior, with support from the Danish Arts Council.
Crossing Context Neukölln addresses "Interventions through artistic research" and will continue until 2015. This year's edition presents eleven works by Danish and French artists and activists, focusing on themes of "Identity" and "Gender."
The performance series kicks off with a five-day public workshop led by urban designer Pascale Lapalud and sociologist Chris Blache on the topic of Gender and the city, specifically exploring the presence of femininity in public spaces. The two artists draw parallels between Neukölln and the multicultural 20th arrondissement of Paris, where similar gentrification processes are taking place. At Richardplatz, artist Christine Dilmi will set up a tent for 96 hours as part of her performance Fil Conducteur, engaging in intense interactions with local residents and passersby. Visual artist Magda Mrowiec invites participants to Urban Dawns. Breakfast with the Sun at sunrise on the Lohmühlenbrücke. In Sara Hamming's performance Whole Body Treatment #4, the audience, consisting of just one person, experiences an individual body performance modeled after therapeutic treatment situations.
From May 7 to 14, kunstraum t27 will host performance projects daily: the Berlin-based artist duo Vinyl Terror and Horror will present a concert installation featuring repetitive arrangements, dizzying mixes, amateur film sound effects, and scratches, launching the event series alongside Oswaldo’s bar (Layla Torres Mollerup and Bailly Blo).
The authors and directors Allio – Weber from Paris explore questions of social identity and gender construction in their video installations Prim'Holstein and Fin de l’Origine du monde. Ellen Vestergaard Friis investigates the themes of time, light, and energy in her works Six Saints: Tycho Brahe and Six Saints: H.C.Ørsted, each creating one piece that occurs solely in space and another that unfolds only in time.
The program concludes with two performances centered on autobiographical writing. In the performative essay A Golem, a Clown, a Recluse by Boris Azemar, the search for new identities beyond biological male gender is explored, revealing deep-seated longings for pregnancy, security, and conflicting social norms. The lecture and performance My mom is a wolf, my dad… by the Danish artist group Giraff Graff on the final evening focuses on our innermost selves and addresses healing processes prompted by questions about the inner animal, its essence, and the possibility of engaging in dialogue with it.
