Young Art from Dresden – Exhibition Opening “ALSO”
by Michael Klipphahn on March 16, 2013, from 7 PM
Michael Klipphahn is currently a master student under Prof. Ralf Kerbach at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste and has been his assistant since 2010. Since 2012, he has been awarded a scholarship from the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit. In 2011, the painter, born in Riesa in 1987, participated in the exhibition “Art Students Present” at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. The exhibition at Galerie M2A will showcase current works, most of which have been created specifically for this occasion.
Klipphahn's large-scale oil paintings on canvas and paper depict arranged groups of figures, inspired by themes from contemporary popular media.
Modified in color and form, the figures, torn from their original context, assume a completely new function.
Colorful ribbons and masks conceal symbolic body parts of the youth, while others are distorted and reduced to their essence. This creates a new dimension between appearance and reality, raising questions about rational values in society.
The title “Also” refers to one of Herta Müller’s earliest paper collages, which, like Michael Klipphahn’s work, explores themes of identity and homeland.
