Sympressionismus

"Sympressionism" is a term that has not yet been widely adopted, referring to a style in the visual arts. The word is derived from the terms symmetry (from the ancient Greek συμμετρία symmetría, meaning 'proportionality') and expressionism (from Latin expressio, meaning 'expression'). It is rooted in the tradition of expressionist abstract painting.

Anikó Havas has been using this term since 2013 to describe her specific variant of contemporary and partially digital abstract art.

Sympressionism employs various elements and techniques from the visual arts, including painting, photography, digital image processing, and printmaking. In Sympressionism, mirrored image elements are combined into symmetrical compositions, creating images that reflect one another in opposing arrangements. This symmetry facilitates an internal and unique dialogue between the elements of the artwork. Our minds are drawn to things and phenomena that embody aspects of symmetry, as the human brain is wired to recognize and strive for order and structure. Our world would be unimaginable without symmetry; it forms the foundation of many aspects of life, including reproduction, communication, and orientation. (Anikó Havas)

"The universe is based on a plan whose intricate symmetry is present in some way in the inner structure of our mind." (Paul Valéry)
