Paintings by Thomas Baumgärtel based on the principles of modern four-color printing

“Stylishly,” Thomas Baumgärtel embarks on another chapter of his artistic journey. With their graceful transparency, the new paintings initially appear to be impressionistic. In reality, the intoxicatingly sensual impression arises from a technique borrowed from the CMYK color model of modern four-color printing. The color spectrum is reduced to the four colors Cyan = C, Magenta = M, Yellow = Y, and Black = K (for Key, representing the black component), from which the image is constructed through overlays. However, the underlying grid in the work of the Banana Sprayer is not made up of dots, but of countless sprayed banana stems.

What presents itself from a distance as a seductive still life of fruit, a portrait, or an idyllic landscape reveals itself upon closer inspection as a perfect illusion. The artist engages with the future of visual perception, referencing art history, which is currently undergoing a rapid transformation due to electronic media.

Following the great success of the banana pointillism invented by Thomas Baumgärtel, the 30works Gallery presents the exhibition CMYK, featuring fresh banana stem paintings and other selected works from the realms of painting and object art.
