Doppelrolle

Joachim Elzmann – Thomas Klingenstein

Opening: Friday, May 7, 2010, 7:30 PM

The current exhibition at kunstraum t27 brings together works by two public figures who, in the best sense, lead a double life or are at least perceived in very different contexts.

On one hand, we have the artist Joachim Elzmann, who, in his other role (Michael Haas), is a significant and internationally successful Berlin gallerist and art dealer. For Elzmann, who began his artistic career in 1974 with studies in Karlsruhe and Braunschweig, both professions are strictly separated, and for a long time, the true identity of Joachim Elzmann was a well-kept secret.

The second artist is Thomas Klingenstein, who published his poetry collection in West Germany at the age of 19 under the name Thomas Erwin. This publication, along with his politically oppositional stance, led to his arrest in the GDR and subsequent deportation to West Germany in 1981.

Klingenstein, a protagonist and witness of an important phase in German history, is increasingly gaining international recognition for his impressive artistic work.

In addition to the intriguing biographical backgrounds of the exhibitors, the extraordinary artistic significance of their works was crucial for the selection. Accompanying events will address the theme of "double roles."

Thomas Klingenstein will read from his book "Der Tag will immer Morgen bleiben" (Poems, R. Piper & Co. Verlag, Munich 1981), and both artists will discuss their dual roles in the art world during the concluding artist talk at the finissage.

Joachim Elzmann presents stunning glass sculptures that revel in the colors and shapes of found containers. Glasses, vases, bowls, and other vessels are imaginatively reassembled into harmonious or dynamic forms.

Thomas Klingenstein showcases large-format works on paper, whose delicate design and reduced color palette captivate the viewer. Personal impressions with a precise gaze, sometimes mysterious.
