ETAW [iːtɔ:] is a conceptual cooperation between the two Berlin based artists Steffen Kasperavicius and Jorge Lopes.
By an alternate and simultaneous formal rearrangement or scenic process of wooden or metallic found objects from the street, junk yard or road works, ETAW examines the essence and value of outcasted and non-functional materials. The resulting sculptural images and objects, thereby, are moved into an art context, which thematizes this socio-critical aspect through transformation and process of disintegration and shows a critical attitude, which distrusts the permanence and the static. ETAW's interest is not only construction but also deconstruction, extraction of signs and surfaces, rests and processes of degradation of nature and society.
The operating method follows an alternate and regular pattern of collecting and the consequent developing of the objects and sculptures. The focus firmly lies ona straight but temporary collaboration through exchange, discussion and composition to combine the talents, instead of typical solo artist attitude. Experiences from painting (Lopes) on the one hand and installation/sculpture (Kasperavicius) on the other hand are related to a common work series and presented as autonomous artistic position.
