Patrick Lo Giudice - AFRIKA
Patrick Lo Giudice - AFRICA
With their new exhibition, the Cologne gallery 30works takes you into the magical world of Sub-Saharan Africa. A world that no longer exists, brought back to life by the Swiss artist Patrick Lo Giudice through his virtuoso encaustic interpretations. Black-and-white photographs from Africa in the 1940s served as his raw material: images of dancers and musicians, kings and priests.
Building on the ancient technique of encaustic, the Swiss artist has developed a painting method where pigments are encased in wax like insects in amber. “Through the ‘fogging’ of the photographs, entirely new dimensions emerge. The diffuse layers of wax create an illusion of ambiguity. Instead, they draw attention to the inner, central content of the images,” says Patrick Lo Giudice.
At the heart of his “Africa” cycle are themes of cult, magic, and spirituality. It is no coincidence that he has turned to the Black Continent: for him, African art is “the cradle of modern art.” In a dynamic dialogue with his images, 30works presents a selection of traditional African artifacts, authentic cult and utility objects that fascinate with their diversity of forms and functionality.
