Sebastian SCHRADER & Jorma PURANEN "telling time"

Formally, the photographs from Helsinki and the paintings
from Berlin are initially only connected by quotation of
fragments and portraits from old masters’ works.

The works
by JORMA PURANEN, one of Finland’s most important
photographers, and SEBASTIAN SCHRADER, a young
painter from Berlin, run across each other in Leipzig, realize
their point of contact and immediately have a big talking
point in their communication: time.

The carefully planned
coincidence of the dialogue of two strangers starts
broadening while the observer is only left to enjoy
witnessing this process.

Both artists master their medium
(painting and photography) with easy certainty and
professional virtuosity.

Thus equipped, they can venture
forth technically and contentual, experimenting with time
on a timeless level.

Following the spirit of Ernst Bloch - time
as a clock without numbers, existing solely from something
happening - in the works of the two artists happens a lot of
what becomes imaginable if you understand time as an
openly formed stage instead of a closed chronology.
