25 Years Thomas Baumgärtel @ 30works
Bright yellow, crooked, and a bit cheeky: For 25 years, Thomas Baumgärtel's spray banana has marked extraordinary art locations around the globe. Now, the "banana sprayer" is celebrating his birthday at the Cologne gallery 30works. The exhibition opens on December 10, 2011, at 8 PM with a vernissage.
He has been called a "art rebel, a Robin Hood of the zeitgeist": the Cologne resident Thomas Baumgärtel. For a quarter of a century, Germany's most famous sprayer has been fighting for artistic freedom against commercialized and elitist structures. Whether as a logo for legal and illegal public art, as a peace, freedom, or rock banana – in his use of the yellow fruit as a vehicle and medium for his art, Thomas Baumgärtel has demonstrated an overflowing imagination and creativity over the past 25 years. From early works to banana pointillism and current pieces, the retrospective at 30works showcases a cross-section of his extensive oeuvre, where much, but not everything, revolves around the banana.
